Email-based two-step sign in adds an extra layer of protection to your Hover account by requiring a one-time verification code in addition to your username and password. This article explains how the feature works, walks you through signing in when it's active, and covers what to do if you get locked out or can't access your email.
Why email-based two-step sign in matters
Hover requires two-step sign in on every account to help keep it secure, so it can't be turned off entirely. If you have app-based two-step sign in enabled, that takes priority; if you disable the app, Hover automatically switches you back to email-based two-step sign in until you re-enable the app.
Note: Prefer using an authenticator app instead of email codes? See Enabling two-step sign in on your Hover account to switch to app-based two-step sign in.
Before you begin
- Access to your primary or backup email address: Hover sends a six-digit verification code to both addresses on file, so you'll need to be able to check at least one of them.
- Your Hover username and password: you'll enter these first, before the verification code.
Step 1: Sign in with your email verification code
You'll complete this process every time you sign in to Hover:
- Go to the Hover control panel sign-in page.
- Enter your username and password, then select Sign in.
- Open the email account listed as your Hover contact and find the verification email from Hover. Note: Until you enter the code, Hover support can't tell you which email address is on file for the account — this keeps your account private during sign-in.
- Copy the six-digit code from the email, enter it on the Hover sign-in screen, and select Confirm code.
If you get locked out
Entering the wrong verification code more than five times will automatically lock your account. If this happens, you can reset your password or contact our support team to have the account unlocked.
If you can't access your email
If you can't access your primary or backup email address, you won't be able to sign in to your account. Contact our support team to arrange alternate verification.
Next steps
- Switch to app-based two-step sign in: see Enabling two-step sign in on your Hover account if you'd rather use an authenticator app instead of email codes.
- Keep a backup email address current: this gives you a second way to receive verification codes if you lose access to your primary inbox.
