Canceling Services with Hover

We're sorry to see you go, but we want to make sure you have everything you need to close things out with us. What you need to do next depends on what you're canceling — an existing domain, a domain you just registered, or a Hover mailbox — since each one works a little differently.

Understanding Your Cancellation Options

Domains and mailboxes are canceled differently depending on their status. Review the scenario that matches your situation below before you start.

Before you begin

  • Know what you're canceling — the steps and refund rules are different for an existing domain, a brand-new domain registration, and a Hover mailbox.
  • Check your auto-renew setting if you plan to let a domain lapse, since an active auto-renew will renew (and charge for) the domain again before it expires.

Step 1: Cancel an Existing Domain

  1. Turn off auto-renew before your next renewal date. Once registration time has been applied to a domain, Hover can't cancel or refund it.
  2. If you want your site to stop displaying right away instead of waiting for the domain to expire, disconnect it by updating your DNS or nameserver settings instead of canceling the domain outright.

Note: Domain registries don't offer refunds or cancellations for unused registration time, so Hover can't offer them either.

Step 2: Cancel a New Domain Registration

  1. Contact Hover within four days of registering the domain to request cancellation at the registry.

Warning: Most extensions allow cancellation only within this four-day window (.UK is one exception). On the fifth day, the registration becomes final and can no longer be canceled.

Step 3: Cancel a Hover Mailbox

  1. Choose one of the ways to cancel your Hover email that matches your situation.

Note: Hover refunds canceled email accounts at a pro-rated amount if you cancel within 365 days of the original purchase.

Next steps

  • Contact Hover Support if you're unsure which cancellation path applies to you.
  • Review any connected services, like email or DNS, tied to the domain you're canceling, so you're not caught off guard by unrelated changes.
