Email forwarding lets you redirect messages sent to a Hover-hosted mailbox to another address, without needing to check multiple inboxes. This article explains how forwarding works, the recipient opt-in requirement, and how to set it up from both your Hover control panel and webmail.
How Email Forwarding Works
Any domain hosted by Hover can use forwarding as part of its mail services, including a Big or Small Mailbox. All of Hover's available mail services can be forwarded to another address.
Note: Hover doesn't provide free email service. You need to purchase and set up mail service for your domain before you can forward it.
Before you begin
- An active Hover mail service on your domain: This requires either a Big or Small Mailbox plan, or Hover's mail forwarding feature already purchased and configured.
- The destination address you want to forward to: have it ready, since the recipient will need to confirm they want the forwarded mail.
Understanding the Forwarding Opt-In Requirement
Hover requires recipients to confirm forwarded mail before it starts flowing. When you create a new forward or edit an existing forwarding destination, the target email address must explicitly opt in to receive forwarded mail.
- After you save a new forward, a warning label reading "Waiting for recipient to accept forwards" appears beside it.
- The forward stays inactive until the recipient accepts.
- Once the recipient confirms, the warning disappears and the forward starts working normally.
The forwarding destination receives an email with an invite link. Visiting the link displays a confirmation message letting them know they'll now receive forwarded emails.
Step 1: Set Up Forwarding via Your Hover Control Panel
- Sign in to your Hover control panel using your chosen 2FA method.
- Select Emails from the navigation bar.
- Click Edit beside the email address you want to forward.
- Click Edit forwarding.
- Enter your forwarding address and click Save forwards.
- Optionally, to forward to multiple addresses, click + Another Forward, enter the additional address, and save.
The Emails section now displays your forward. If the recipient hasn't opted in yet, you'll see the "Waiting for recipient to accept forwards" label until they confirm.
Note: Former Vistaprint customers are hosted on Hover's Enhanced Email Cluster B server.
Step 2: Set Up Forwarding via Hover Webmail
- Sign in to Hover Webmail.
- Go to Settings > Mail Forwarding.
- Adjust the forwarding settings:
- Enabled – turn forwarding on or off.
- Keep Local Copy – save a copy in your Hover inbox as well as forwarding it, or forward only.
- Forwarding Recipients – enter the destination addresses. Each must opt in before receiving mail.
Next steps
- Confirm the forward with your recipient: ask them to check for the invite email and accept it so the forward becomes active.
- Review your other mail settings: see Using Webmail Settings at Hover to explore filters, autoresponders, and more.
